Coaching Skills Training Course for Supervisors and Managers

Coaching skills training for managers and professional people

Many managers and professional people are very good at solving problems.   This ability is one of their main strengths.  But the mental approach needed for problem-solving is very different from the one needed for coaching, and unfortunately the habit of problem-solving can be a serious obstacle to success as a coach.  That’s why coaching skills training is a common requirement for managers and professional people whose responsibilities include developing others and delegating to them.

Are you aware of the method you use when your people come to you for help, and of the effect it has on those you are trying to help?  Do you wear the Problem-Solver’s hat, or the Coach’s hat?  (Also see management style)

Many managers and professional people assume the role of Problem-Solver because they've never learned an alternative approach.  And Problem-Solver's approach has its advantages.  People who can't think for themselves welcome it because Problem-Solver takes their problem over and thinks for them.  But he has a serious limitation.  He's poor at coaching and developing people because he keeps them dependent on him, and then finds it hard to delegate to them“Coach”, on the other hand, is good at helping people think for themselves, and that’s why he’s a better developer of people and finds it easier to delegate.  (Also see leadership development

The coaching skills training you receive on the London based "Skills with People" course will enable you to choose which hat to wear when someone comes to you for help.
