What is a Shopping Cart?

A Shopping Cart does not actually conduct the transaction. The Shopping Cart keeps track of a shopper through your website, as they select products to purchase from your online store. Your customer can view the contents of their cart at any time and add or remove items. Your website may have twenty people shopping simultaneously. Your Shopping Cart keeps track of them all and their selections.

Postage / Shipping

This can be fairly complex. For example, there is the number of items, their combined weight, their destination and the type of delivery (eg. next day, next week...) all of which must be taken into acocunt, because quite simply the website must bill the customer the total and correct amount automatically.

Search Engine Compatability

Why have we built our own shopping cart? Why do we not use one of the popular 'Off the Shelf' and much cheaper shopping carts?

All of the complexity, described in brief above, requires complex web-based data managment. Search Engines are less able to read complex data systems. For this reason, many commonly available shopping carts can hinder your site listing on search engines.
